Maida, a powerful and commanding performer, is known for her daring in movement and innovation as a choreographer. She has created a significant body of work for Maida Withers Dance Construction Company, over 100 dances of breadth and vision, involving a process of experimentation and collaboration. These works have toured to over 18 different countries often with support of the U.S. Department of State. Every three to five years, Maida initiates and produces a large-scale work resulting from international on-site research and investigation. Current projects involve collaboration with dancers, artists, scientists, anthropologists, and technologists. Maida has an on-going interest in the use of technology, multimedia and new media, mixing imagination and daring with a keen sense of formal structure and beauty. Site specific performances have been created for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Lenin Museum (Russia), Modern Museum of Art (Rio de Janeiro) and many others. She is the founder of the DC International Improvisation Plus+ Festival (1995-present). Maida is a professor at The George Washington University Department of Theatre and Dance where she directs MFA and BA programs in dance.
